Sheltering assistance is still available to Iowa survivors as winter weather approaches

DES MOINES, IA ā€” Iowans who received sheltering through theĀ State of Iowa Disaster Recovery Temporary Housing ProgramĀ (DRTHP) due to the severe storms, tornadoes, and flooding that occurred in April, May, and June 2024 will continue to have access to the program as winter weather approaches.Ā 

"As we head into the fall and winter seasons, it's important that Iowa survivors continue to have access to safe shelter as they work towards rebuilding,ā€ said John Benson, Director of the Iowa Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management.Ā ā€œThe State of Iowa remains dedicated to supporting Iowans as they continue to rebuild and recover."Ā 

In July, Governor Reynolds announced that the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) approved the State of Iowa Disaster Recovery Temporary Housing Program, andĀ recognized the importance of providing shelter options that allow survivors to remain in their communities.Ā The program provided temporary housing, which included recreational vehicles and travel trailers for Iowans whose homes were majorly damaged, destroyed, or deemed uninhabitable in counties under a federal disaster declaration.

Since its inception in July, the program has provided a safe place for residents to live while they work on repairs or figure out their next steps. The program will continue to be available for survivors who need shelter.Ā 

For those who do not qualify for FEMA direct housing assistance, the State will transition them to winter-ready housing options. These may include apartments, hotels, dormitories, or manufactured homes suitable for Iowa winters.Ā The State of Iowa actively works with survivors to ensure their needs are met and create a housing plan.

How to Apply for the DRTHP:

  • To qualify for theĀ programĀ the household must have a valid registration with FEMA forĀ disasterĀ assistance and cannot have requested to withdraw.
